For the first time since 2007 RIM was not the #1 in US smartphone sales. Don’t for a second think it was Apple, rather Android stands #1 in Q2 2010 sales. Numbers from NPD group show Android accounted for 33% of U.S.

As many regular RIMarkable readers know, I participate in a weekly podcast about wireless technology news and gadgets called the Simple Mobile Review Podcast . It’s a fairly new show that we (myself and the guys over at Simple Mobile Review ) started recording around the beginning of the year and we’ve just completed our 29th episode , of which every single last one of them has been absolute blast to record. The SMRpodcast isn’t specifically about devices coming out of Research in Motion, however, BlackBerry news is a big part of what we talk about and is a major segment of the show each week. You can listen to the show directly from the web, or, you can subscribe to it and have it automatically downloaded to iTunes , your Zune , or subscribe to our RSS feed to listen in your podcast player of choice. We even have a free SMRpodcast application for BlackBerry users that you can install to your device and have the show automatically downloaded every week. When you get a chance, listen to the show. Follow our new Twitter account, @SMRPodcast , and leave us comments telling us what you like about the show, what you dislike about the show, and if there is anything that you’d like us to cover in an upcoming episode

Bolt , a third part web browser that makes viewing web pages on a BlackBerry device tolerable, has been updated to version 2.11. BitStream says that the update to Bolt doesn’t add new functionality, however, it does address several issues (read bugs) with the previous version… Bitstream is releasing a new update of the BOLT mobile browser: version 2.11. The 2.11 release includes important updates that address server response times which eliminates the problem on some websites that has caused BOLT to hang at 20 percent on the progress bar, as well as improves Twitter use. Although there are no new features in this release, Bitstream strongly recommends all users update to this new version for an improved mobile browsing experience.

I have to admit that it is not very often that I actually spend money buying BlackBerry applications. It’s not that there aren’t a lot of really good BlackBerry applications out there, however, one of the perks of writing a BlackBerry blog is that developers often send you evaluations of their software so that you can review it. That being said, I recently spent $10 on BerryReader , the most awesome Google Reader client for the BlackBerry that I’ve ever seen, and, it was worth every penny.

The title of this post pretty much says it all. The White House said Sunday that President Barack Obama will sign a presidential memorandum today committing the federal government to auctioning off 500 megahertz of federal and commercial spectrum. This will nearly double the amount of available wireless spectrum and help meet the demands for high-speed video and data transmission to the seemingly ever increasing number of cell phones, laptops and other mobile devices. The administration said it hopes to encourage the spread of wireless broadband across the country, including rural areas. The auction is intended, in part, to counter fears of a potential “spectrum crunch” as smart phones and laptop computers become more popular and new wireless devices hit the market.
