The BlackBerry Torch 9800 Seems Like A Proof Of Concept

As many of you who listen to the SMRpodcast already know, I broke down and bought a BlackBerry Torch this passed weekend. I hate to reiterate the sentiment of most every other objective BlackBerry Torch review out there that you will find, but, at the end of the day, the device is what it is… The BlackBerry Torch seems like a proof of concept of BlackBerry 6 running on 2-year old hardware… I actually really like BlackBerry 6 , Research in Motions long over due major overhaul significantly enhanced update to the BlackBerry operating system.  (A detailed review of BlackBerry 6 is coming) The hardware on which RIM decided to debut it on, however, is kind of baffling. My take on on the BlackBerry Torch 9800 from a hardware standpoint ranges from “underwhelming” to “its alright i guess”.  It is as though RIM took spare parts from the BlackBerry Storm and the BlackBerry Bold 9800, slapped them together, and put a really decent OS on it.  Don’t get me wrong, if you are on AT&T and looking to upgrade, or, get your first BlackBerry, the BlackBerry Torch is the device to get.  I just don’t see, however, how this device will attract consumers that don’t already want a BlackBerry when compared to Android and the iPhone.

Free BB App: face2face Combines LinkedIn, Facebook, And MySpace Into A Single BlackBerry App

I just installed face2face , a cross platform, location aware, social networking client from Promimate Global that combines Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter networks into a single client as well as ads consolidated chat between face2face users, on my BlackBerry, and, although I’ve only played around with it for about 5 minutes, it seems to be a pretty slick app thus far. face2face is a location-aware smartphone app that solves the problems of privacy and safety that have become synonymous with social networking – so that more people can benefit from the advantages that come from knowing which friends are nearby. I probably won’t enable any of the location aware aspects of face2face, and I will probably keep using a dedicated Twitter client on my device, however, face2face could be a candidate to replace Facebook for BlackBerry and LinkedIn for BlackBerry.  I can’t say for sure just yet, however, I am impressed with speed and the interface of the app and if it allows me to effectively git rid of Facebook which is slow, and replace LinkedIn which is large, face2face, my find a permanent home on my BlackBerry Storm 9530 which is memory starved

What Will Apple Say In Their Press Conference Today?

I know that this is a BlackBerry site, but, Apple is holding a pretty important press conference today, presumably about the iPhone 4 antenna issues many users have been complaining about. I am guessing that Apple will fall short of issuing an iPhone 4 recall, however, will probably offer some type of cheap bumper case that prohibits physical contact with the antenna

Opinion: Android Devices With Good Phyiscal Keyboards Pose A Bigger Threat To The BlackBerry Than The iPhone Ever Has

I was having a conversation with a few friends recently all of whom know that I am really into smartphones, the BlackBerry in particular.  One of them had just gotten a new iPhone 4 and was trying to convince the rest of us, all BlackBerry users, that the iPhone 4 was going to crush the BlackBerry and put RIM out of business.  Being the smart Alec that I am I asked if he was using the term “crushed” loosely like when he said the iPhone would crush the BlackBerry, the iPhone 3G would crush the BlackBerry, and the iPhone 3Gs would crush the BlackBerry.

Bloomberg: iPhone Coming To Verizon In January

According to two (unnamed)  people said to be familiar with the plans, the iPhone, currently exclusive to AT&T in the United States, will become available to Verizon subscribers starting in January of next year.  This isn’t the first time that we’ve heard this rumor.  It is, however, the first time that we’ve heard it from a news organization as big as Bloomberg . The question for me was never one of “if” the iPhone would come to Verizon, but, more of “when” would the iPhone come to Verizon.  The big questions that I have now are: How will Verizon’s network stand up?
