I was just taking a look at numbers published by mobile analytics firm, Distimo , that outlines Research in Motion’s abysmal performance when it comes to BlackBerry applications as compared to their competitors. The best way to describe the number of applications in BlackBerry App World is to call it a complete and utter embarrassment … I would even go as far to say that if RIM doesn’t address application support and development on the BlackBerry in a big way this year, you will begin to see the BlackBerry’s gains in total market share begin to turn into losses, especially here in the United States.

A lot of BlackBerry users are unaware that the browsing the web via your BlackBerry doesn’t have to be as painful as it is via the BlackBerry Browser. There are third party alternatives that are quite good and offer a darn good experience compared to what you get natively. One such thrid party BlackBerry browser is Bolt Browser . You may have heard that Research in Motion has been working on a new Webkit based BlackBerry Browser that they say will be on par with that found on the iPhone by the summer of this year. To let the world know that they were serious, RIM purchased Torch Mobile , makers of the Webkit IRIS browser back in August of last year. Just the other day RIM filed a patent application describing a proxy based web browsing scheme similar to that found in Opera Mini, and recenytly, analysts over at Canaccord Adams have gone on the record stating they believe the new BlackBerry Browser will be out before May and that the experience will be a “ game changer “. “it is a full rendering engine with incredible speed, sub three second download speeds for the most media-intensive of websites, while retaining significant bandwidth advantages over any other device or browser on the market.” For the sake of argument, let’s say that the new BlackBerry Browser actually turns out to be better than Safari on the iPhone. Is that enough to change the game? I am not so sure that a really good, or even a great BlackBerry Browser is enough to change the game alone
Today at Lotusphere 2010 Research in Motion launched two new BlackBerry applications, one for IBM Lotus Quickr and one for IBM Lotus Connections, that will allow secure mobile collaboration and social networking on the BlackBerry platform. I believe that many BlackBerry users are eagerly anticipating the new WebKit based BlackBerry browser to that is supposed to be on par with, if not better than, mobile browsers currently found on devices like those running Android, Web OS, and even the iPhone OS. The BlackBerry Browser, however, isn’t the only thing RIM is looking at to improve your web browsing experience on the BlackBerry. A new patent application recently filed by Research in Motion aims to speed up communication between the web and your web browser by installing a proxy server of sorts directly on your device.

The Verizon BlackBerry Curve 8530 is now available. You can pick the device up for $99.99 after a $100 instant rebate. Something tells me that the Curve 8530 is going to a pretty big hit for Verizon. It is the second BlackBerry to support OpenGL ES (3D graphics), and the price point is very attractive. The BlackBerry Curve 8530 is also the first Verizon BlackBerry with the optical trackpad. No more trackball issues like its predecessor
